Colossus - Wake

COLOSSUS is a progressive sludge metal band, but they add layers of stoner, metal and doom to their mix of music. Hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, this three-piece band have released their debut album with Lars G Petrov of ENTOMBED on guest vocals and Morgan Ågren of KAIPA and MATS/MORGAN on drums.

Opener "A Stir From Slumber" has some great sludge / stoner metal riffs, a big guitar sound and throaty vocals from Niklas Eriksson. "Traitor’s Gate" is another track of intense emotional playing, fantastic riffs, drumming that will astound you and a thick sound that will get stuck in your head. "Reflections of the Arcane" and "Ruinbuilder" are a one-two punch of blistering hard rock that will kick you in the ass with the raw power that is being thrown at you. "Pillars of Perennity" is a powerful, fat riffing song and the vocals from guest crooner Lars G Petrov from ENTOMBED gives the track a nice edge to it.

As you listen to the album, you get pulled in deeper and deeper into the swirling and huge sound that the band created. The riffs come at you fast and furious; the bellowing vocals mixed with the emotion that is put forth really make the songs stand out.

"Suncarrier" is a fantastic song built around Peter Berg’s thunderous bass and with a groove that will get your feet tapping and your head banging. "Kingdoms" has Morgan Ågren drumming and he's pounding the hell out of the kit...devastating. The vocals are clear and thunderous; the bass adds more depth and creates a heavy track that is one of my favorites on the album. "Cloudhead" is a bass heavy track that has elements of BLACK SABBATH and is a great track to crank up loud. Final track "Fungal Gardens" at eleven minutes is a track that proves you can go large and still have a kick ass song that holds your attention at that length.

The band has done a great job on creating a debut album that goes beyond the typical and goes into the special. This album was made with care and I'm glad that they took their time making it since its immediately accessible, catchy, and unforgettable. This is one of those albums that should propel them into a higher level of popularity and it's well deserved.
